[Review] 6진 – Rain Effect

6진 - Rain EffectAfter making a semi-comeback at the 2013 MAMAs, Rain has officially returned with his 6th album, “Rain Effect,” the first from the singer since before he entered the army two years ago. While the album cover suggests a collection of psychedelic, 70s inspired music, “Rain Effect” was more a mix of Ballads, Middle Eastern influenced dance numbers, and some run of the mill Kpop songs.

With his first promotional single, “La Song,” Rain has nods to the sounds of the middle east as well as to styling from earlier in his career. For a lead single, there was too big an absence of lyrics, making this song better suited to be an introduction. The video, however, was entertaining with the party atmosphere, and suggestive and sexual imagery, proving that 2 years on hiatus, and a new girlfriend hasn’t made him any less sexual.

For his second promotional single, “30Sexy,” Rain tells of the sexy side of being 30. He give hints to retro music with the combination of his falsetto singing, and a chorus that is reminiscent of Earth Wind and Fire’s “September.” Rain does exhibit chameleon-like abilities by jumping right into electronic music, a recent musical trend. Apart from that, Rain doesn’t do anything that challenges himself or stands up to his past music. In fact, it was majorly disappointing to see the background dancers busting better moves than Rain!

The true highlight of this album, however, was “Dear Mama, Don’t Cry” for which Rain draws on some real life experience, the death of his mother. It was nice and incredibly refreshing to hear an artist draw on something personal. This is the song that shows that Rain has grown musically since his debut.

Like every other Cloud, I counted the days until Rain’s return, and it kills me say that I can’t quite declare that the King is back. It seemed unrealistic that after only less than a year being signed to new agency, Rain could already be releasing an album. And, considering the lackluster quality of this album, I’d say my assumption was and is right, that this album came too quickly. Perhaps a single would have been better executed.

Nothing about this album even attempted to rival what Rain has already done with his career, not the music, not the choreography, not the styling, nothing. While there are some memorable songs, this album, in its entirety, is not.
