Name Is 4minute

#50: Whatever

by 포미닛 (4minute)

Album: Name Is 4minute | Released: April 26, 2013 | [Listen] [Review]

“Whatever” was the real highlight of 4minute’s “Name Is 4minute” album, because it was the only song that even slightly fulfilled their promise of returning to the style of music they debuted with. There was a return of Jiyoon to rapping, and remnants of Hip Hop in the sound, and the song reminded me a lot of one of my favorites from this group, their 2009 number, “What A Girl Wants.” The best part of all, was that it was not another over sexed mess that 4minute had taken too.

Who Are You_

#49: It’s Me ft. Dumbfoundead

by 가희 (Kahi)

Album: Who Are You? | Released: October 10, 2013 | [Listen] [Review]

As I said in my review of the album, I was underwhelmed with this song. I still feel Kahi could have made a lot bigger an impact with this song, her first solo project since her departure from After School, however, “It’s Me” still made my list.

Kahi has a special brand of sexy that cannot be found anywhere else in Kpop at the moment, and “It’s Me” allowed Kahi to make that quality the focus point of her solo career, thus making this song a standout this year.

I Like 2 Party

#48: Hot

by 박재범 (Park Jaebeom)

Album: I Like 2 Party | Released: July 10, 2013 | [Listen]

2013 was a tiring year for me when it came to Jay Park. His social media antics, his content cursing in his music, and his apparent refusal to venture back into the world of R&B, wore thin on my patients. “Hot,” however, was the one shining light among his 2013 releases for a few reasons. One, being that it was clean. My ears were so thankful that “Hot” wasn’t just another song littered with meaningless cursing. Two, Dok2 was NOWHERE to be heard. I am completely tired of that duo. And three, this was just a good ol’ party song done right!

Tonight

#47: Tonight

by 스피카 (SPICA)

Album: Tonight (Single) | Released: August 28, 2013| [Listen]

SPICA really wowed with there hippie/hipster styled single. SPICA is a leading girl group in terms of their talent, and while they still haven’t quite gotten the level of attention they deserve, they continue to release creative, and fresh material. This was definitely a highlight song in their careers, and it seems that having Lee Hyori as a mentor is doing wonders for them. Her confidence, and skill is clearly rubbing off on them, and it really shows with “Tonight.”
